AEM Internship/Co-op Program There are several internships open to University of Minnesota aerospace engineering undergraduate students at several Twin Cities locations. Boeing Internships Boeing recruits more than 100 students each year to work in Seattle's Information and Support Services, Defense and Space, and Commercial Airplanes divisions. The Boeing intern program is open to college juniors and seniors and looks for students actively involved in extracurriculur activities such as campus engineering societies. Approximately 85% of interns study engineering and computer science. There is a rolling application process, but the deadline for sending materials is January 31. College of Wooster REU Program. Research areas include: self-organized criticality, musical acoustics, liquid crystals, hydrocarbon emission in star-forming regions, liquid-liquid critical phenomena. More information and application available here.

Fermilab Internships for Physics Majors (IPM). The program objective is to introduce students majoring in physics to the current methods and problems of high energy physics research. A small number of students from closely related disciplines such as computer science or engineering are also accepted into the program. Jet Propulsion Lab, Pasadena, CA The JPL has a cooperative education program for US citizens with an overall GPA of 3.0. Students must be able to work an initial 6 month long tour. Tours begin in January and in May/June. Students must be enrolled in a cooperative education program at their college or university. John F. Kennedy Space Center--NASA NASA sponsors a six-week Space Life Sciences Training program that is conducted by the Kennedy Space Center and Florida A&M University. The program is for college students interested in life sciences, bioengineering, or related fields. Participants gain insight into how space life sciences flight experiments are conducted, as well as explore current and future research opportunities. Applicants must be in one of the following majors: Animal Sciences, Biochemistry, biology, Biophysics, biostatistics, Chemistry, computer Science, Ecology, Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology, Health Science, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Pharmacy, Physics, Plant Sciences, Psychology. Lincoln Laboratory, MIT The laboratory hires students that have completed their sophomore year to work as technical assistants in designing hardware, programming scientific instruments, and providing technical support. Technical assistants work for 10 paid weeks and housing is subsidized. Applicants should have a background in electrical engineering, physics, or computer science and a minimum GPA of 3.0. Lunar and Planetary Institute--NASA Johnson Space Center: The Institute invites students in the geosciences, physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science, and mathematics who have completed at least 50 hours of credit to participate in lunar/planetary research with scientists at the Institute and the NASA Johnson Space Center. The program runs for 10 weeks. Participants receive $350 per week and a maximum of $1000 toward travel expenses. Selection is based on scholarship, curriculum, and experience; career objectives and scientific interest; and a match between the interests of the applicant and available research projects. To apply, send the following information: (1) name, address, and day and evening telephone number where you can be reached; permanent address and telephone number; school, class, GPA (4.0=A) Fall semester courses and GPA if not available on transcript; date on which your spring semester ends; major field of study, three areas of interest from the potential areas of research listed above or from other areas of scientific research, and rank these from 1 to 3; information regarding relevant work experience or training (summer jobs, research assistantships, computer use or programming, photographic darkroom experience, specific instrumentation experience, etc.); (2) a brief biographical sketch; (3) a description of academic goals, career plans, and scientific interests; (4) a brief summary of why you wish to participate in the intern program; (5) official transcripts and three letters of recommendation covering academic achievement, career potential, and character (ask those providing reference and transcripts to mail these directly to LPI to be received by the February 11 deadline). McDonnell Douglas Student Development Program (SDP): The SDP is for engineering juniors and seniors. Participants work in several divisions including aircraft, training systems, electronics, missiles, and aerospace information services. Contact: Student Development Programs, McDonnell Douglas, P.O. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers a summer research program for minority students interested in engineering, genetics, physics, math, computer science, and toxicology. For more information contact: Margaret Daniels Tyler, (617) 253-4869. Deadline: January 15.

Northwest Aerospace Training Corporation (NATCO) has co-op positions available. Each sessions lasts approximately 12 weeks. A two year commitment is requested of program participants. Co-ops will assist in several aspects of flight simulation related to software or hardware engineering. This may include research, redesign, development and/or modification of the electronic, mechanical and computer systems used within the training devices. Preferred co-op requirements are: a college sophomore or junior attending a four-year accredited college, completion of one or more quarters in a major or minor field of Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Graphics, ability to manage projects and processes, excellent oral and written skills, experience with FORTRAN and/or C programming, and experience with PC applications. NASA Internships: There are at least 200 different NASA programs, ranging from high school summer jobs to undergraduate and graduate internships to graduate fellowships. Internships vary at each of the nine NASA field centers (Ames, Goddard, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Johnson, Kennedy, Langley, Lewis, Marshall, Stennis). National Renewable Energy Laboratory/Department of Energy (NREL), jointly with the DOE and Association of Western Universities, offers summer internships to junior and senior college students. Applicants must be studying mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, electrical engineering, and environmental science. Interns receive a stipend and travel expenses. Required application materials include: a list of colleges attended and cumulative GPA, a resume indicating professional interests and career goals, copies of transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a statement of interest that includes relevant research experience. National Science Foundation The NSF has internship programs in each of the following divisions: Materials Research and Engineering, Astronomical Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, Physics, Science and Technology. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL): The Professional Internship Program, sponsored by the ORNL and the Environmental Restoration and Waste Management Program (ERWM) through the US Department of Energy (DOE) is designed to provide practical hands-on experience for students majoring in chemistry, computer science, engineering, environmental science, geology, and health physics. Applicants must have completed one year of college study and have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
