(4 cr; A-F or Audit; offered Every Fall & Spring)
Equivalent courses: was DES 1311 until 03-SEP-24, was DHA 1311 until 07-SEP-10
Design elements and principles in context of observational drawing. Integrative approach to two-dimensional design, three-dimensional design, and drawing. Broad conceptual framework for design exploration. Emphasizes perceptual aspects of visual forms.
GDES 1312 - Foundations: Color and Design in Two and Three Dimensions
(4 cr; A-F or Audit; offered Every Fall & Spring)
Equivalent courses: was DHA 1312 until 07-SEP-10
This design foundations course introduces students to color theory and its application in two and three-dimensional design through lectures, demonstrations, extensive studio work and critiques. Emphasis is placed on attuning the student eye to nuances of color and in developing the ability to use color effectively in two dimensional design applications. This occurs by learning, studying, and practicing the use of traditional design elements, Gestalt grouping principles, theories of color organization, color and spatial perception, and color interaction. Work for this course is created using both digital design tools and analog methods. But it is so much more. Intended for (pre) majors in the Department of Design, Housing, and Apparel, this class has a well-earned reputation as "the toughest class you'll ever love." Course time is spent with slide and lecture presentations, studio work, and group and individual critiques and feedback activities. Upon completion of class, you will have produced a body of work that is a descriptive explanation and illustration of color and design theory, enhanced with your own creative projects. You will be proud of your work. Most importantly, you will see the world in a whole new light. You'll see color where you didn't see it before and recognize the "color magic" around you.

This is a course where we will learn how to design screen-based applications centered around the human experience rather than the limitations of engineering or the stylistic trends found in advertising/marketing. Approaching from the frameworks of semiotics and systems thinking, we will realize that design practice extends far beyond the narrow-minded definition of ?solving a problem.? By the end of the semester, we will be equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary to engage in the creative practices of shaping interactive experiences on various scales. As a studio class, the majority of instruction will be centered around projects, followed by critiques. This isn?t a User Experience or computer programming course and will not cover topics regarding user research, testing, and web development. Rather, we will devote our attention to the visual construction of user interfaces that go beyond the typical offerings of ?clean? and ?corporate? aesthetics. We will utilize our understanding of color, typography, and even motion to offer new ways to interact with the digital medium.
