Emergency Medicine (EMMD) Courses

EMMD 7504 - Emergency Medicine
(4 cr; P-N only; offered Every Fall, Spring & Summer)
Equivalent courses: EMMD 7500 (inactive, starting 08-MAY-17, was EMMD 7501 until 28-AUG-00)
This is the P/N version of the required Emergency Medicine course. The student will have the opportunity to work with Emergency Medicine faculty and residents who for direction. Under their supervision, the student is expected to act as the primary physician for Emergency Department (ED) patients, including initial assessment, performance of minor procedures, interpretation of lab and x-ray, and preparation for admission to inpatient services. The student will also have the opportunity to observe critical resuscitations.
EMMD 7505 - Poison Center Control
(2 cr [max 4]; P-N only; offered Every Fall & Spring; may be repeated for 4 credits)
This is a unique rotation that will allow students to participate in didactics to gain an understanding of the basics in toxicology, specifically at the Poison Center. Once didactics are complete, the students will be able to apply what they?ve learned by taking Poison Center phone calls and managing exposures real time. For a 2-week rotation: Students will be participating in didactic learning which includes lectures given by Poison Center staff, student/resident lead topic discussions, and additional activities to facilitate learning. For a 4-week rotation: During the initial two weeks of the rotation, students will be participating in didactic learning which includes lectures given by Poison Center staff, student/resident lead topic discussions, and additional activities to facilitate learning. Once the didactic portion of the rotation is complete, students will answer Poison Center calls, providing real-time recommendations to callers under the direct supervision of the Poison Center pharmacists. Students will document cases in the Poison Center database. Note: Schedule may vary depending on co-rotators.
EMMD 7515 - RPAP-Emergency Medicine
(4 cr; H-N only; offered Every Fall, Spring & Summer)
EMMD 7521 - Emergency Medicine Research
(4 cr [max 8]; P-N only; offered Every Fall, Spring & Summer; may be repeated for 16 credits; may be repeated 2 times)
An introduction to Emergency Medicine Research. The student initiates or participates in a research project under the direct supervision of emergency medicine clinician-researchers. Didactic research conferences also are available.
EMMD 7530 - Special Elective in EMS
(4 cr; H-N only; offered Every Fall, Spring & Summer)
This four-week rotation within the Allina Emergency Medical Services is designed to give students first-hand experience in the complex EMS system. Students will observe and in some cases participate in medical direction, audit and review process, emergency preparedness and daily operations of this major urban medical system.
EMMD 7571 - Clinical Toxicology and Emergency Medicine
(4 cr; H-N only; offered Every Fall, Spring & Summer)
Equivalent courses: was MED 7571 until 05-SEP-00
Students are involved in initial stages of providing critical care to patients with serious, sometimes life-threatening medical problems. Fundamentals of clinical toxicology: drug overdoses, acute alcohol intoxication and withdrawal syndromes, antidotes, toxic inhalations, environmental toxins, indications for hemoperfusion/dialysis, street drug problems, pediatric poisonings.
EMMD 7600 - Acting Internship Advanced Emergency Medicine: Career Track
(2 cr [max 4]; H-N only; offered Every Fall, Spring & Summer; may be repeated for 4 credits; may be repeated 2 times)
This course is designed for medical students interested in pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine. Students will rotate at a Level I Trauma Center.
