Introduction to Thermal Science (3.0 cr; Prereq-Chem 1021, Math 2243, Phys 1301, [IT student or COAFES pre-BAE major]; A-F or Aud, fall, spring) Thermodynamics, heat transfer. Thermal properties of substances. First/second laws of thermodynamics. Steady/unsteady heat conduction. Thermal resistance concept. Convection heat transfer. Radiative heat transfer between solid surfaces. Boiling/condensation heat transfer.

ME 4090 -- Advanced Engineering Problems, 1 - 4 credits

Prerequisites: ME upper div, instr consent

Independent research project with faculty adviser in mechanical engineering, typically related to adviser's research interests. Student contacts adviser to develop project description well before project's start date.

ME 8361 -- Molecular Gas Dynamics, 3 credits

Prerequisites: CSE grad student

Kinetic theory of gases, Boltzmann equation, Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, collisions, transport properties. Introduction to quantum mechanics. Statistical thermodynamics, classical/quantum statistics. partition functions and thermodynamic properties. Irreversible thermodynamics.
