Geofluids such as magmas, groundwater, petroleum, lahars, and geothermal fluids often contain particles and bubbles suspended in a liquid substrate. These fluids thus constitute multiphase-multicomponent systems. Understanding the flow behavior of such complex fluids, particularly when dealing with high temperature and pressure conditions, as in the case of magma flow, requires the use of analog laboratory experiments and/or computer simulations as direct investigations are typically not possible or too dangerous. Here, I will present some of the methods applied, and results obtained, in the Geofluids Research Group (www.geo.umn.edu/orgs/geofluids) in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Minnesota.
