Graduate Studies

APPLICATION PROCEDURES


Application Deadlines:


  • December 15 is the application deadline for those students who wish to be considered for a Teaching or Research assistantship or a fellowship. Applications received by December 15 will be given priority considered for admission and financial support. Applications received after December 15 will be considered on a space available admission and also for financial aid.

  • January 15 is the deadline for additional assistantships (TAs primarily)
  • March 15 is the final application deadline for those who do not need to be considered for financial assistances, although we strongly urge applicants to submit their application well before this deadline

The entire application process is two-step. We have summarized below which materials get submitted to the Graduate School and which materials get sumitted to the Department. Please be aware that your application will NOT be reviewed until both files (The Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics Department file and the file in the Graduate School) contain all of the required materials and are considered complete.


Graduate School Requirements


***Application Materials that should be sent to the Graduate School, NOT to the AEM Department.***

The Graduate School requires that you apply for admission online through Apply Yourself at the Graduate School Web page . You must indicate the appropriate program code of the major and degree for which are are apply. Use only one of these codes. The Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics Major codes are:

Master of Aerospace Engineering -- 214830108
Master of Science -- 214831508
Ph.D. -- 214860208

Graduate School Application Fee: ($55.00 domestic applicants, $75.00 international applicants). Please do not request that the fee be waived or deferred. The Graduate School does not grant such requests nor will they allow the Department to waive the fee for you. They will NOT process your application if you do not pay the fee. If your admission application is not processed by the Graduate School, it will not be sent to the Department for review.

Official Transcripts from all colleges and universities attended: (International students see Section B of admissions application) The Graduate School only considers transcripts to be official if they are sent directly from the university or college to the Graduate School. Photocopies of transcripts are acceptable and legible copies can be faxed to the Graduate School at 612-625-6002 to help expedite the processing. Do not send an official set if sending copies. If admitted, the Graduate School will require an official set of transcripts at that time.

Official TOEFL scores: See above (Your application can be processed with copies of these scores however; if you are admitted an I-20 will not be sent you until the Graduate School has received the official scores). TOEFL Institution code: 6874, Department Code 63

Current Registration Information: (if applicable) listing courses you expect to complete as part of your present program.

Statement of Purpose: State the goals for your graduate education. Concisely discuss your educational, research, or industrial backgrounds as they relate to your objectives. Include any unique experiences relevant to research you have done. Talk about why, specifically, you are applying to the University of Minnesota. Please include names of faculty members and research areas that are of interest to you.

3 Letters of Recommendation: from current or former professors who can assess your potential for graduate work. Other recommenders, such as employers, are also acceptable. REQUIRED FOR ALL APPLICANTS. These are submitted on-line through the Graduate School. Recommenders will be asked to complete the on-line narrative portion. Paper copies will NOT be accepted.

The Graduate School receives thousands of applications per week, so as soon as it is possible, a notice of receipt of application will be sent out.


Department Requirements


**Application Materials that should be sent to the AEM Department, NOT to the Graduate School.**

Financial Aid (Assistantship) Application- if applying for financial aid

Statements: on career objectives, teaching/research experience, and publications.**You may use the same Statement of Purpose you submitted to the Graduate School with your application.**

The rest of the application materials we need we will receive from the Graduate School.
Please do NOT send us anything besides that which is listed above.
