Current research projects

Dr. Zhao applies principles and methods of dynamic system modeling, optimization, estimation, and computer simulations to air traffic management (ATM), optimal aircraft flights, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) flights in winds, and environmentally responsible aviation.

He applies a wide range of optimization methods to study these problems ranging from discrete, parameter to dynamic optimization, and deterministic as well as stochastic optimization frameworks. In ATM research, in particular, he uses both deterministic and stochastic tools to study trajectory generation and prediction, conflict detection and resolution, scheduling, validations, and benefit evaluations.
