Starting in 1991 with the original members of the MnSGC, Augsburg College, Bemidji State University (BSU) and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (UM-TC), the Consortium is now entering the second five-year phase of funding. We are looking forward to building n the many successful, established programs of the past several years.

As you read through this issue of The North Star, you will notice that the MnSGC took a giant step in the right direction with the addition of seven new academic affiliates in 1994. They are: Bethel College, the College of St. Catherine, Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, Macalester College, Normandale Community College, the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMND) and the University of St. Thomas. By adding seven new academic affiliates, the opportunities for program development and the scope of the Consortium have been dramatically enhanced for K-12 and public outreach, curriculum development, undergraduate and graduate research, scholarship/fellowship distribution and other special activities. This issue of The North Star has been designed to highlight as many of our programs as possible.

A major goal of the MnSGC is to provide opportunities to involve and train more women, underrespresented minorities and the physically disabled in math and science. In the past year, of the $55,834 in scholarships and fellowships awarded, 38% of the recipients were women and 14% were underrespresented minorities.

Bill Garrard, the MnSGC Director, has been on sabbatical leave during Spring Quarter 1995 conducting research abroad at the Centre d¹Etudes et de Recherches de Toulouse (CERT). We are looking forward to his return in July.
