Physics Expo '97-
Bethel College will host a two-day Physics Expo in January, 1997 featuring eight regional high schools. The Expo attempts to pair two suburban and two urban high schools together in an inter-active series of demonstrations involving the application of lasers in physics and engineering. Contact Dr. Tom Greenlee at Bethel for more complete information; gretom@bethel.edu.
Eye to the Future Conference~
Augsburg College will again host the annual Eye to the Future Conference for girls in grades 5-8 in April, 1997. This conference is open to young women who are interested in careers in math and science. The conference is proud to host many exciting women specialists in their fields. Contact Dr. Jeanine Gregoire at Augsburg for more complete information; gregoire@aug1.augsburg.edu.
Twin Cities Science Fair~
Augsburg College will host the TC Science Fair in March, 1997. This fair invites students in grades 6-12 from surrounding TC metro schools to present papers and poster projects that will be judged by representatives from co-sponsoring organizations: MN Academy of Sciences, MnSGC, and the International Science and Engineering Fair.
More information can be obtained by contacting the Augsburg College MnSGC office at (612) 330-1253.
Share the Future~
Bemidji State University will again host the Share the Future Program that give K-8 students the opportunity to improve their skills in math, science, and reading with the aid of undergraduate mentors. Contact BSU at (218) 755-2092 for more information about this upcoming program in March, 1997.
Sverdrup Lecture Series~
Augsburg College will host a lecture in April is free and open to the public. This year's speaker is Dr. Jim Anderson of Harvard speaking on upper atmospheric zones. Call (612) 330-1551.
Career Choices and Computing Camps for Girls~
The University of Minnesota, Program for Women at the UM-TC will again hold two week-long camps for girls in grades 5-8. This camp gives girls hands-on computer skills in a supportive environment (see cover page). Contact Dr. Susan Marino, Director of Programs for Women; marino@fs1.itdean.umn.edu.
Rockets for Schools Workshop~
The Minnesota Department of Transportation is spearheading the "Rockets for Schools" program in Minnesota. The plan is to launch a Super Loki rocket in May, 1998 from a site near Duluth. Grades 6-12 science teachers are being offered a workshop at the college of St. Catherine, led by Dr. Terry Flower, dept. of Physics, to prepare hands-on activities and curriculum in advance of the launch. The workshop is being planned for July 7-11, 1997. Interested teachers are being asked to submit proposals for the workshop as part of the application process. All outstate participants will receive travel stipends. Graduate credit is available through the College of St. Catherine. Application information can be obtained by contacting Randi Quanbeck, MnSGC Program Coordinator, at (612) 626-9295.
Aerospace Workshop for Teachers~
The UM-TC offers 2 popular week-long Aerospace Workshops this summer. Supported by NASA and MnSGC. Call (612) 625-1811.
Engineering Camp for Minority Students~
Mr. Sam Moore, Assistant to the Dean for APEXES at UM-TC will hold the first Introduction to Engineering and the Physical Sciences (ITEPS) program this summer. The ITEPS program intro- duces undergraduate and high school students from underrepresented groups to the physical sciences and engineering fields through participation in a week-long study course. Planned activities include the exploration of a virtual extra-terrestrial terrain, cost analysis of a small robot, and hands-on computer assisted laboratory demonstrations. Site visits to 3M, Lockheed Martin, and Honeywell are also in the planning stages. Information can be obtained from APEXES at (612) 626-0219.
