The National Kidney Foundation of the Upper Midwest, Inc., sponsored The Great Airplane Toss at the Minnesota Twins/Texas Rangers Game, Friday, May 26, l995. The airplane design for the contest was provided by the AEM Department and our design students provided assistance during the event.

Sebastien Menuisier, exchange student from the Ecol National Superieure de Aeronautique et de l'Espace in Toulouse, France, spent spring quarter and summer working with Professor Gary Balas on the the control of flexible structures.

Maria (Pino) Martin was involved in recruiting female graduate students to the department through the efforts of women in the Institute of Technology.

Steve Anderson presented a paper at the Twelfth U.S. National Congress of Applied Mechanics in Seattle, WA.

Abbas Alahyari gave a talk on his work at the 47th Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society Division of Fluid Dynamics, Atlanta, GA.

Ph.D. student in Control Sciences and Dynamical Systems, Jim Buffington, was one of the co-authors of the paper which won the Best Paper Award for the 1994 AIAA Guidance Navigation and Control Conference. The paper entitled "Active Vortex Control for VISTA F-16 Envelope Expansion" was co-authored by Richard Adams, James Buffington and Siva Banda. Jim and his co-authors received their award at the 1995 GNC meeting in Baltimore, MD. Jim is a participant in the distinguished Palace Knights, Program of the U.S. Air Force and is doing his Ph.D. with Professor Dale Enns as his advisor.
