AEM Co-Sponsors Conference Focused on Mathematics and Mechanics in the Physical Sciences
The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics is co-sponsoring the joint meeting of the Society of Natural Philosophy (SNP) and the Institute for Mathematics, University of Minnesota. The event is to be hosted as a special tribute the University's late Mathematics Professor, James Serrin.
Serrin received his doctorate from Indiana University in 1951. In 1954 he began his 41 year career at the University of Minnesota, retiring from his position as Regents' Professor Emeritus for the School of Mathematics in 1995. A natural philosopher, his contributions in partial differential equations, calculus of variations, real analysis, fluid mechanics, and foundations of thermodynamics are works of the highest quality that exemplify the unity of mathematical and physical science.
In honor of Serrin, the meeting will bring together researchers, Ph.D.'s and graduate students who share the mathematician's passion for dialogue and interaction between mathematics and mechanics. It will highlight recent advances in the mathematical analysis and rational mechanics of materials and spark conversation between senior and junior investigators.
The meeting will take place at Vincent Hall, room 16, from November 14 - 16, 2013. Prospective participants are urged to notify Chi-Sing Man (email@example.com) of their interest in attending.
Other sponsors include the Society for Natural Philosophy; the School of Mathematics, University of Minnesota; the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, University of Minnesota; and the Office of the Dean, College of Science and Engineering, University of Minnesota.
