Brief Biography for Alan Cocks


Alan Cocks obtained a BSc in General Engineering at the University of Leicester in the UK, graduating in 1977.  He then did a PhD at Cambridge under the supervision of Mike Ashby, which he was awarded in 1981.  He then spent 3 year as a Research Associate at Leicester, before moving to the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign as a Visiting Assistant Professor from 1984 to 1985.  He then returned to Leicester to take up a Lectureship in Engineering and moved to Cambridge in 1990 as a Lecturer in Engineering and Fellow of Downing College.  He was awarded a Chair in Engineering at Leicester in 1996, and was Head of Department from 2004 to 2005.  In 2006 he was appointed to the Professorship in Materials Engineering at the University of Oxford and elected to a fellowship at St Anne’s College.
