Abstract:
The design of a small satellite that would make high altitude and reentry flow field radiation measurements is discussed. The satellite would make the high altitude measurements during a series of controlled elliptical orbits. Then, it would reenter the atmosphere to obtain new nonequilibrium radiation data. The design trade offs are discussed, including the orbital mechanics considerations and the choice of the instrumentation. Flow field and radiation predictions are presented; these results show that the proposed experiment is feasible and would obtain a wide range of new radiation data.
