Numerical simulation of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability for particulate flows

T.-W. Pan, R. Glowinski, T.I. Hesla, D.D. Joseph, J. Periaux

In this article we briefly discuss, first, a distributed Lagrange multiplier based, fictitious domain method for the numerical simulation of incompressible viscous flow, modelled by the Navier-Stokes equations, around moving rigid bodies. Then we apply the above method to simulate the sedimentation of densely and regularly packed solid particles, initially at rest and located on top of a lighter fluid. The simulation clearly shows that a Rayleigh-Taylor instability takes place at the beginning of the sedimentation phenomenon.
